is our beautiful Wild Redhead - a female Scarlet Macaw hatched in February 1998.
She joined our family when she was six months old. She hadn't been socialized properly as a baby, and was fearful and aggressive.
Gradually she learned to trust us and now she loves to play and enjoys a good head scritch.
She has a limited vocabulary, but uses the words she knows at the appropriate times, asking "What's that?!" when she sees or hears something new, then reassuring herself "It's all right" when she knows there's no danger. She also tells us "Wannit?" "Good gir-r-r-r-l!" and a plaintive "Wanna pla-a-a-a-y??"
Jesse loves to do "hand" acrobatics on Mom's fingers.
Another thing she loves is to play under the hose. Our patio is screened in and when the weather's nice, she gets a frequent bath. (This picture was taken from outside the screen looking in, so the quality isn't the best.)

Scarlet macaws are very active, extremely intelligent, often very loud birds. They require a lot of space and constantly test you to see if you will enforce the rules. They can also amaze you with their understanding of their surroundings, touch your heart with their devotion, and keep you laughing at their enthusiastic approach to life. Watching Jesse respond to loving, patient handling has been a rewarding experience, and she is most definitely a treasured member of our family!
