...is our Congo African Grey, hatched in January 1998. His name ("MAH zee") is an African name that means "sir." So far he has at least 50 different words and phrases he says, and he usually adds a new one every week or so. He says things in both my voice and John's voice, and sometimes we don't realize it's Mazi talking!
Mazi joined our family when he was only nine weeks old.
I hand-fed him three times a day using a big syringe filled with formula until he was weaned, which took a couple of months.

I didn't really realize it then, but buying an unweaned baby is a very risky thing - too many things could go wrong. Fortunately, I didn't have any problems with Mazi, and he gradually began refusing to take the formula and learned to get plenty to eat from his nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies, and sharing human food when we're sure it's okay for him to have it.
We have always given Mazi a wide variety of things to play with so that he isn't frightened by new toys.
Companion parrots need as much exercise as they can get, so we encourage lots of flapping. You can see some of his primary feathers are growing out in this picture.

When they are young, Greys' eyes are very dark. At about a year or so, they become light grey and then continue to lighten to a golden color.

Mazi enjoys spending time on top of his cage and often climbs up on top of the little perch up there so he can play with the bell. He also has a bell inside his cage and one that hangs from his T-perch on a chain. He likes to make the bells swing back and forth so they bonk him on the head!
I am totally captivated by my little Grey Guy. As is sometimes the case with Greys, he is not a cuddler, but he does love to "whisper" with me and gives nice kisses. When he's in the mood, he likes a head and neck itch too.
